RSS is a way of delivering news, articles and blogs to your computer as soon as they’re published. If you want to receive an RSS feed from a web site that you like (say, The Group web site), there are three ways you can do it.
1. Use your browser
Go to the web site you like. If it provides a link to an RSS feed (like The Group links above), simply click on the link and follow the instructions. Updates from the web site will then be sent directly to your browser toolbar. This will only work if you are running the latest versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari.
2. Use a feed-reader web site
Web sites such as Netvibes and Bloglines can be used to store and organise RSS feeds from a number of sources. First, sign up to one of these web sites. Then, go to the web site you like, copy the URL of the RSS feed you want to receive and paste it into the “Add content” box. It’s not as complicated as it sounds and each site has its own Help section to guide you through the process if you get stuck.
3. Download feed-reader software
Applications such as Feedreader and FeedDemon offer another means of storing and organising RSS feeds. Download feed-reader software from one of these sites (it’s often free) and simply copy and paste the URL of the feed into the “Add content” box. Again, each application has its own Help section if you get stuck.
